Dust ‘til Dawn

Dust is the dirty little secret we all have, but what exactly is it? Once we tell you, you, you’ll wish we didn’t.

Dust is an umbrella term for fine particles of solid matter.

Dust can be found both in and outdoors, but everyones favourite household villain, is indoor dust. Made up of at least 50% dead skin cells (we warned you), and anything else from pet hair, spiderwebs and dust mites to dead insect particles, tiny plastic particles, soil, bacteria, hair and clothing fibres.

Why do some houses, or some rooms, get dustier faster than others?

  1. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system allows air to circulate, a poor HVAC system allows dust to build up faster. In weather conditions where wind and pollen are present, ventilation is especially important.

  2. Contents of the room or home. Furniture, stuffed toys, blankets, pillows, curtains and rugs can collect and hold dust, making it more difficult to get rid of.

  3. Movement. How often people enter or exit an area affects how many particles are brought into an enclosed space. Factors such as whether or not people remove their shoes, how often doors and windows are opened, and the presence of pets can also contribute to the prevalence of dust.

What can I do about it?

Prevention is key, if you notice dust in abundance, it probably is an indicator of one or more of the above factors. Control those you can, make sure windows and doors are opened every once in a while and take your shoes off in the house.

The right regular cleaning schedule is important to make sure dust is lifted from floors, upholstery, carpets and surfaces.

Dust in different rooms is made up of different particles, for example dust found in the kitchen may mix with oil and grease particles, and must be removed in a different way to dust which is dry.

Dust which has built up over time may also require different methods to be removed that dust which is new.

Inhalation and regular contact with dust can cause or irritate respiratory conditions such as asthma, cause allergic reactions, damage blood vessels and cause inflammatory reactions that can lead to high blood pressure, arrhythmias, strokes, and heart attacks.

Dust also increases vulnerability to common illnesses such as COVID-19 or the flu, and cause skin irritation or eczma.
